The word is out in some of Boston's gang-ravaged neighborhoods. There's a new gang out there. New colors on the street. While these members do prescribe drugs at times, they don't 'deal' and they aren't doing anything illegal. Instead of a handgun, they carry a stethoscope and a common purpose. They are members of Boston's new Community Health Services outreach group, designed to provide low-cost and mostly free health services to some of the city's poorer communities.
Besides offering medical examinations, checkups, immunization, and outpatient services, the group of physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, and other health care professionals talks with youths and adults about health-related topics such as nutrition and the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
The Community Health Services outreach group is a volunteer service funded mostly through grants from Boston-area hospitals and through personal donations.
