About William Horton

William Horton has devoted most of his career applying ergonomics and human factors to find better ways to communicate technical and business information. A registered professional engineer and graduate of MIT, he specializes in engineering effective communication media.

As founder of William Horton Consulting, he guides corporations and other business and educational organizations in designing more effective communications. He conducts public and in-house seminars on subjects ranging from online documentation to visual communication.

His works have won international recognition. In April 1988 at the Industrieform Hannover, an international jury of top industrial designers awarded the menu and online documentation system designed by William Horton the IF-Industrieform Seal of Quality, which has recognized excellence in design since 1953. This is the first time that this award has gone to a software user-interface. In 1990 he was presented the Joseph T. Rigo Award by ACM's SIGDOC for significant ongoing contributions in promoting excellence in software documentation. His book, Illustrating Computer Documentation, was given an Award of Achievement in the Society for Technical Communication's 1992 International Technical Publications Competition.

William Horton is also author of The Icon Book, which has been translated into four languages, and Secrets of User-Seductive Documents, and co-author of the Writer's Pocket Almanack. His most recent book is Designing and Writing Online Documentation, Second Edition.
